GrowGood

projects

GrowGood (growgood.org.au) is the latest major initiative from the Growing Data Foundation, born from a commitment to returning data control to primary producers and building a more transparent global food system.

By leveraging emerging standards like Digital Product Passports (DPP) and ValueFlows, GrowGood provides a trusted origin data layer that allows farmers to demonstrate their sustainability credentials and provide verifiable provenance for their products without being locked into proprietary silos.

The project

GrowGood was initiated following our Chairperson’s involvement with the Regenerative Currency Foundation. It has since evolved into a comprehensive AgTech platform that addresses the growing demand for transparency in the food supply chain.

The project focuses on three key pillars:

  • Farmer Data Sovereignty: Ensuring that the data generated on the farm stays under the farmer’s control, shared only with consent and for clear value.
  • Traceability & Provenance: Providing a cryptographically verifiable record from seed to shelf, enabling “tell us once” data entry that serves regulatory, commercial, and consumer needs.
  • Market Access: Helping Australian farmers meet increasingly stringent international requirements (such as the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) through automated, standards-compliant reporting.

The tech

GrowGood is architecturally unique in the AgTech space. Rather than a centralised database, it is built as a series of decentralised nodes using:

  • ValueFlows (VF): An open economic vocabulary based on the Resource-Event-Agent (REA) model, allowing for rich modelling of agricultural processes.
  • JSON-LD 1.1: A native serialisation format that ensures data is both machine-readable and semantically rich, preserving context across systems.
  • Event-Sourced Immutable Ledger: All state changes are derived from an append-only log of events, providing a robust, auditable history of every agricultural “lot.”

This stack aligns directly with the DAFF Data Interoperability Framework and pre-empts the requirements for future digital product passports in the global marketplace.

About

The Growing Data Foundation is the Australian not-for-profit body behind GrowGood. As an open-source project, GrowGood is part of the global “Digital Commons,” providing shared infrastructure that no single commercial entity should own.

We are currently collaborating with researchers, industry bodies, and primary producers to pilot GrowGood as a reference implementation for the next generation of agricultural traceability standards.
