The tech utilised for the Mount Burr Wetland restoration included ultrasonic and pressure water level sensors combined with a solar-powered remote LoRaWAN gateway.
About the Mount Burr Wetland Restoration Project
The Mount Burr Swamp as it is now affectionately called, was drained completely through the building of a network of drains to make it usable as farmland to graze sheep and cattle.
In 2012 Nature Glenelg Trust, a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organisation purchased the farm and began restoring it to its natural state.
The transformation has been incredible, with the swamp now home to many species of frogs and native fish.
An important part of the project was to have the ability to remotely monitor water levels real-time. The Growing Data Foundation committed resources to addressing this need by deploying five LoRaWAN water level sensors and installing a solar-powered LoRaWAN gateway to enable the transmission of real-time water level data. The collaboration also involved the development of a ‘dashboard’ to create a visual representation of collected data.
